Resin has a reputation online for being high-maintenance. In practice, day-to-day care is simple — here's what actually matters and what's overstated.
What actually keeps a resin knob looking new?
Wiping it down with a soft, dry cloth. That's the entire routine for normal use — cured resin is a solid, dense material, not a delicate finish that needs constant attention.
Does it get too hot to touch in the sun?
Not the way a bare metal knob does. Metal is an efficient heat conductor, which is exactly why aftermarket metal shift knobs are a recurring complaint on car forums for scorching hands in summer. Resin insulates far better, so it won't build up that same painful surface heat — it can still feel warm on a hot day, like any dark interior part, but not "can't touch it" hot.
Will it crack or come loose?
Normal driving and shifting won't crack a hand-poured resin knob — it's solid and dense, not a hollow shell. It also threads directly onto the shifter rather than clamping on with set screws, which is the more common cause of aftermarket knobs working loose or cracking in the first place.
What should you actually avoid?
Two things, and neither is a daily concern: abrasive polishes or solvents, which can dull the surface over repeated use, and leaving the car sealed shut in extreme, sustained heat for long periods — the same caution you'd apply to any resin or plastic interior trim, not something specific to shift knobs.
